Dans le village italien de San Vito les habitants sont tous les jours, depuis sept ans, réveillés par le coq du maire à... quatre heures du matin. La vie y est ordonnée, disciplinée, tranquille. Mais les villageois épuisés se plaignent, cherchent une solution pour se débarrasser du coq et enfin dormir en paix. Le maire d'un village voisin leur propose un échange: leur coq contre son âne qui, dit-il, leur apportera bonheur et richesse. Le marché est accepté. Les villageois de San Vito peuvent maintenant dormir autant qu'ils le veulent, mais bientôt rien ne va plus. Un laisser-aller général envahit le village, au désespoir de son maire qui s'ennuie du coq! La boulangère et quelques compères tentent de le ramener au village. -- Rédigé dans un style vif et direct, ce roman est frais, joyeux. Les personnages y sont colorés et sympathiques. Nullement moralisateur, il montre avec humour l'utilité d'un peu discipline! [SDM] |
